LOOK CLOSER TO SEE WHAT THALASSEMIA IS HIDING

It may not always be apparent, but serious risk of morbidities can exist in some patients regardless of transfusion history.1,2

Emerging data show chronic anemia may be associated with serious long-term complications in NTD patients with thalassemia1

While the focus over many years has been on patients with thalassemia who are dependent on transfusions for survival, new data reveal that chronic anemia may be associated with serious complications in non–transfusion-dependent (NTD) patients.1-3

Thalassemia is a chronic genetic blood disorder2,4

Thalassemia may be classified as either alpha-thalassemia or beta-thalassemia, depending on the affected genes. It’s a complex disease with various subtypes (ie, “thalassemia minor,” “thalassemia intermedia,” and “thalassemia major”) and classifications (ie, “non–transfusion-dependent” and “transfusion-dependent”); however, transfusion dependence may not adequately predict patient risk.1,2,4

The pathophysiology of thalassemia shows that if left untreated in some, it can lead to progressive organ damage and serious and potentially irreversible morbidities.5,6

Patients, regardless of transfusion frequency, may be at risk for serious complications and need a long-term management plan.1,5,7
